Working in partnership with Richard Thomas of Ecocheck we supported WRAP Cymru in developing a Re-use Alliance of Wales. On behalf of WRAP Cymru we managed and facilitated the delivery of a “back of store” pilot in surplus food redistribution and use from a Cardiff store of an identified UK retailer. The pilot built on previous work carried out by WRAP Cymru and generated outputs to enable other organisations in the food and drink sector in Wales to explore surplus food redistribution and use themselves. We provided support to JBA Consulting ltd in developing the capacity of Welsh Government contact centre staff to deliver resource efficiency advice and support for domestic, community and public sector audiences. The project developed the knowledge and diagnostic tools and provided training to enable the contact centre to provide initial advice and signpost to support on energy, waste and water efficiency. We provided project management support to Peninsula Enterprise in the delivery of this pathfinder project, testing targeted business support and engagement mechanisms in those areas of Gwynedd where superfast broadband was available. Activities included provision of information via the Business Wales website and enquiry service, a series of inspiring action workshops and 1-2-1 specialist business advice. The project was funded and coordinated by Welsh Government and Gwynedd Council.
We managed the project to calculate the amounts and composition of wastes generated at the Crieff Hydro Hotel, a major resort hotel in Perthshire, Scotland. The project included waste compositional analysis of catering wastes combined with analysis of recorded waste data for previous years to estimate the volume and make-up of the wastes produced. This information fed into recommendations for improved waste monitoring to provide a more accurate waste baseline against which future improvements could be measured. Further recommendations on waste prevention and recycling were also provided in an implementation plan.
Envirowise Wales was established to support businesses in Wales to actively minimise the amount of commercial and industrial waste produced at source and to minimise waste to landfill by 2026. The work resulted in significant resource and CO2 savings through resource efficiency and improved waste management. Welsh businesses continue to achieve year on year financial and resource saving benefits.
A range of support has been provided to public sector bodies in Wales since 2003 including initial awareness raising activities and an equipment fund to increase recycling. These activities evolved into the Public Sector Waste Minimisation Campaign (PSWMC) in 2008 with the aim of supporting organisations in the implementation of action. Activities since 2008 have resulted in 5,400 tonnes of actual and potential waste diversion year on year and over 80% of organisations in the Wales public sector have actively made improvements to waste management since 2008.
We carried out a study to map the surplus food redistribution and use activity across Wales on behalf of WRAP Cymru. Data was gathered through desk research, telephone, on-line and face to face survey activity. Click here for further information on surplus food redistribution.
On behalf of WRAP we carried out a literature review to distil existing knowledge on the effective use of business-to-business communications in changing behaviours.
We provided support to Databuild in research to improve the effectiveness of WRAP case studies. The research included a detailed literature review, qualitative and quantitative research. EandSP led on the literature review, the analysis of research findings and the production and presentation of guidelines for use by programme teams across WRAP.
We investigated a new approach for businesses in Wales to take effective action on climate change mitigation thanks to funding from the Welsh Government’s Support for Sustainable Living programme.The funding explored the viability of a business model where small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) can have access to “their own energy manager” who is shared with a limited number of other organisations. The concept is now being piloted as the SREM project.
We provided specialist analysis support and advice to RMG:Clarity and wrote the published report to inform WRAP and its funders about consumer reuse purchasing behaviours in relation to priority materials textiles, EEE and furniture. The primary aim of the research was to identify robust reuse displacement figures for second hand purchases of a range of products.
The purpose of the study was to rigorously define the operational parameters under which a Centralised Anaerobic Digestion (CAD) facility to be located at a dairy processing plant would be sustainable, both environmentally and economically. The study concluded that food wastes, dairy manures and dairy processing wastes could be converted to renewable energy and a valuable soil conditioner (digestate) whilst avoiding GHG emissions, displacing fossil fuel use, reducing power and heat costs for the dairy processing plant and reducing the need of farmers for expensive mineral fertilisers.
We were the Wales country lead working in partnership with Responsible Hospitality Partnership ltd. We delivered the management and facilitation of the Hospitality and Food Service Agreement (HAFSA) Working Group for Wales meetings and provided technical support in delivery of projects where required.
On behalf of WRAP we piloted the development of sustainable food business clusters. The scope of the project was to work with a geographic cluster and a range/ representative cross-section of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) engaged in hospitality and tourism to support them in:
On behalf of WRAP we led this consortium project with Queen Square Associates plc and Andy Fryers to deliver walk over surveys, resource efficiency reviews and a sustainable events review of seven tourism Centres of Excellence in Wales. The work was part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
On behalf of Best Foot Forward (now Anthesis) we produced the action plan for the grocery sector on the practicalities and benefits of taking part in waste exchange activities such as food redistribution, equipment and materials reuse and process food waste recycling. On behalf of WRAP we carried out an assessment of business models and marketing strategies for the sale of high quality compost and anaerobic digestate products to farmers. We delivered this work in partnership with Databuild, Cranford Economics ltd and David Border Composting Consultancy. The aim was to provide digestate and compost operators with the business case for investing in higher quality agricultural products for farmers, whilst providing farmers with the tools to identify high quality products and avoid the pitfalls of low quality materials. The project provided a robust evidence base and information resources and materials to support WRAP in increasing production and the use of BSI PAS certified composts and digestates.
EandSP supported Best Foot Forward (now Anthesis) in delivering a project for the Waste and Resources Action programme (WRAP) on Home and Workplace Supply Chain Mapping in Wales. EandSP assisted in identifying the key companies in the home and workplace products supply chain in Wales and took a lead role in interviewing companies providing important information on which to base the project conclusions and recommendations.
We managed and contributed technically to the project to measure the waste baseline and reduce packaging waste at SA Brain Ltd (Brains) managed pubs and restaurants. The project including undertaking waste compositional analyses at a number of Brains houses, combined with analysis of historical waste data to provide a waste baseline and overall recycling rate for 2012. Packaging was identified as a major component of the waste stream, and that cardboard and polystyrene wastes could be prevented through collaboration with the major suppliers. A follow-on project involved working with the three main suppliers to the Brains houses to identify packaging that could be returned to and reused by the suppliers. This work resulted in guidance being prepared and issued to Brains houses on the types of packaging that can be reused by each supplier and the procedures for storage and return of the packaging.
The project has provided Brains with a waste baseline against which against which future annual waste arisings can be compared and a process for reducing one of the main components of the waste stream.
